School Safety Training with Charlevoix Law Enforcement

The Charlevoix Area Schools have invited local law enforcement to take advantage of proposed construction to the Middle School by allowing active shooter training to take place ahead of demolition. Local law enforcement from Boyne City, City of Charlevoix, East Jordan, and the Sheriff’s Office will train over two days, June 12 and 13. The purpose of the drill is to provide ongoing readiness training to local law enforcement specific to active assailants in a school setting. Also included are area EMS agencies from Jordan Valley EMS, Boyne City EMS, and Charlevoix EMS as well as fire assets from Charlevoix City Fire. The Charlevoix, Cheboygan, and Emmet County Office of Emergency Management and Homeland Security is assisting local responders with the training.

“We are fortunate to have a window of time between the end of the school year and the start of our building construction to provide our law enforcement, first responders, and emergency management teams this unique opportunity,” said Mike Ritter, Charlevoix Public Schools Superintendent. “This will offer our emergency responders an authentic safety and security training experience to carry out whatever tactical measures might occur during a true active shooter situation.”
Charlevoix County Sheriff Chuck Vondra stated it is indeed a unique opportunity.
“We are unbelievably grateful for this opportunity to be able to train in an environment that maintains realism during training. This is an exercise that is bringing in law enforcement from all over the county so that we can train together like we would respond together. Bringing in EMS and Fire deepens interagency relationships and tests every aspect of the response to an incident of this magnitude,” says Charlevoix County Sheriff Chuck Vondra.

Added Ritter: “We greatly appreciate the support of all of our local EMS agencies that work in concert to provide safety in our schools and communities!”
